Pope Leo XIV, the newly elected leader of the Catholic Church, will preside over his first major Mass today, Friday, in the historic Sistine Chapel, the Vatican announced.

Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni informed journalists that the pope is also scheduled to appear on the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica for the midday Angelus prayer on Sunday, marking another significant moment in his early papacy.

Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, a Chicago native, was elected Pope Leo XIV on Thursday following four rounds of voting in a swift 24-hour conclave in the Sistine Chapel. His election marks a historic milestone, as he becomes the first pope from the United States.

Before his elevation to the papacy, Cardinal Prevost served as a curial cardinal in the Vatican, leading the Dicastery for Bishops, a key department overseeing the appointment and work of bishops worldwide.
