Nigerians to Pay More for Driver’s Licenses and Number Plates Starting June 8, 2025

Nigerians will soon face higher costs for obtaining driver’s licenses and vehicle number plates, as the Joint Tax Board (JTB) has approved a nationwide hike in fees. The new rates, which reflect enhanced security features and rising production expenses, will officially take effect on Sunday, June 8, 2025.

The announcement, made public in May, signals a significant upward adjustment that affects private vehicle owners, commercial operators, tricycle and motorcycle riders, and even government agencies.

Why the Price Increase?
According to the JTB, the fee hike is due to:

Enhanced security features introduced in both number plates and driver’s licenses
Higher incidental production costs
A statement from the JTB reads:

“The Joint Tax Board (JTB) has approved a new price adjustment for motor vehicle and motorcycle number plates and driver’s licenses. This change is driven by the introduction of enhanced security features and the incidental cost of production. The new prices will take effect from Sunday, June 8, 2025.”

A Pattern of Price Adjustments
This is not the first time the JTB has revised these fees. A similar increase was approved in 2021 following the board’s 147th meeting in Kaduna. At the time:

Private and commercial number plates rose from ₦12,500 to ₦18,750
Fancy plates jumped from ₦80,000 to ₦200,000
Motorcycle plates went from ₦3,000 to ₦5,000
Driver’s licenses increased from ₦6,000 to ₦10,000 (3-year) and ₦10,000 to ₦15,000 (5-year)

The current changes represent an even steeper hike, with some categories—such as fancy vehicle plates—doubling in cost compared to 2021 rates.

Whether you’re a private car owner, commercial driver, or motorcycle operator, this development underscores the need to budget accordingly. Licensing offices and vehicle registration centers are expected to implement the new rates from June 8.

Industry experts advise motorists to complete renewals or registrations before the new rates kick in—especially if you qualify for a lower fee under the old system.
