Dove deodorant, soap harmful to users’ reproductive system – NAFDAC

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a public warning regarding potential health risks posed by certain Dove-branded cosmetic products recently banned by the European Union (EU).

In a statement published on its website under Public Alert No. 018/2025, NAFDAC disclosed that the Dove Exfoliating Hand Soap (100g) and specific Dove Deodorants were restricted in Brussels, Belgium over safety concerns. These products were found to contain a banned substance—2-(4-tert-butylbenzyl) propionaldehyde, commonly known as Butylphenyl Methylpropional (BMHCA).

According to the agency, BMHCA is prohibited in cosmetic products within the EU due to its potential to:

• Disrupt reproductive health

• Pose risks to unborn children

• Trigger skin sensitization and allergic reactions

Affected Products Identified:

• Dove Exfoliating Hand Soap (Barcode: 8710447439227)

• Dove Deo Go Fresh 50ml (Batch No: 9212174)

• Dove Invisible Dry 50ml (Batch No: 9183646)

• Dove Men + Care Silver Control Spray 150ml (Batch No: 62867LD)

These products, reportedly manufactured in Italy and the UK, are not registered with NAFDAC and are prohibited for import under Nigeria’s import restriction policy.

NAFDAC emphasized that beyond importation bans, soaps and cosmetic products are part of the category ineligible for foreign exchange, making their circulation in the Nigerian market illegal.

NAFDAC’s Advice to the Public:

• Importers, distributors, and retailers should ensure these products are not in circulation

• Consumers in possession of the affected items should discontinue use immediately

• All stock should be submitted to the nearest NAFDAC office

• Any adverse effects or reactions should be promptly reported via NAFDAC’s Med-Safety App or other official platforms

NAFDAC reiterated its commitment to public health and safety and assured continued surveillance of cosmetic products to prevent the distribution of harmful items in the Nigerian market.
