Beans Prices Drop in Nigeria as Farmers Harvest More Than Ever Before

In 2025, the price of beans and cowpeas in Nigeria has fallen sharply. A 100kg bag now sells for between N80,000 and N120,000, a big drop from last year’s high of N210,000 to N240,000.

Mr. Kabir Shuaibu, President of the Cowpea and Beans Farmers, Processors and Marketers Association of Nigeria (C&BFPMAN), says this is mainly because farmers had a bumper harvest thanks to better weather and planting more crops. He explained that harvest yields were up to ten times higher than previous years, which naturally pushed prices down.

Last year, flooding and pests damaged crops, causing prices to spike. This time around, the weather was much better and farmers planted beans alongside other crops like corn, which increased supply. Traders have noticed the difference too. Mrs. Esther Umeileka, Managing Director of Fresh2Home Ltd., pointed out that fewer pest attacks and higher yields helped bring prices down.

At Lagos’ Oyingbo Market, beans are more affordable for everyday buyers. Mrs. Zainab Ahmed, a trader there, said people can now buy beans without hesitation, with prices dropping to about N6,000 to N7,000 for a paint bucket, compared to N13,000 to N14,000 last year.

Consumers are feeling the relief. Lagos resident Mrs. Tonia Sanwo shared how last year’s prices were hard to bear, but now smaller quantities cost much less — making it easier for families to include beans in their meals again. Another consumer, Mrs. Favour Braye, noted that improved security has helped farmers get back to their farms, leading to better harvests and more affordable prices.

Mr. Shuaibu hopes this positive trend will continue, benefiting both farmers and consumers. He says the sector has seen some tough years and this kind of stability is what everyone needs moving forward.
