UNIJOS Secures Full Accreditation Status for Over 20 Academic Programmes: The National Universities Commission (NUC) has granted Full Accreditation status to twenty-six (26) academic programmes at the University of Jos. This follows an accreditation exercise conducted by the NUC in October/November 2023.
In a report addressed to the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Jos, Professor Tanko Ishaya, and signed by the NUC’s Acting Director of Accreditation, Engr. Abraham Chundusu, the NUC confirmed that twenty-three (23) undergraduate programmes at the University received Full Accreditation status, while two (2) undergraduate programmes received Interim Accreditation. Additionally, the only postgraduate programme evaluated was granted Full Accreditation status. As a result, approximately 93.3% of the seventy-five (75) academic programmes at the University of Jos now enjoy Full Accreditation status.

The NUC is mandated to accredit academic programmes in Nigerian universities through a quality assurance mechanism to ensure these programmes meet minimum academic standards and adhere to government and industry guidelines. Full Accreditation status indicates that a programme meets the NUC’s standards and criteria, providing high-quality training to students and preparing them for successful careers. Programmes with Full Accreditation can run for at least five (5) academic sessions before undergoing another evaluation to ensure their continued relevance and quality.
The programmes that received Full Accreditation status include:
- Mass Communication
- Master of Business Administration (MBA)
- Archaeology
- History & International Studies
- Computer Science
- Architecture
- Geography & Planning
- Building
- Fine & Applied Arts
- Medical Laboratory Science
- Medicine & Surgery
- Pharmacy
- Microbiology
- Plant Science & Biotechnology
- Several education-related programmes
However, two (2) undergraduate programmes, Biochemistry and Geology, were granted Interim Accreditation status. The University administration has started addressing the identified shortcomings to achieve Full Accreditation status for these programmes in the next NUC accreditation exercise.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Tanko Ishaya commented on the positive news, noting that graduates from fully accredited programmes are viewed more favourably by employers. He urged academics and researchers to increase their international visibility to enhance the University’s reputation, attract research grants, donor funding, and international collaborations.
Professor Ishaya also commended the efforts of the Director and Staff of the University’s Directorate of Academic Planning and Management, Deans of various faculties, Heads of Departments, faculty and departmental staff, students, and other members of the University community in achieving this milestone.
