This examination took place in Nigeria from Friday, October 27, 2023, to Wednesday, December 20, 2023. The examiners and candidate script-marked were coordinated across seven marking venues in Lagos, Ibadan, Akure, Benin, Enugu, Uyo, and Kaduna from Tuesday, January 16, to Tuesday, January 30, 2024. A total of 4,162 examiners participated in this coordination and marking exercise.
A notable increase was observed in the number of candidates compared to the previous year, with 85,600 candidates participating, marking a 10.07% rise from the 2022 entry figure of 77,768. Among these candidates, 80,904 sat for the examination across 568 centers throughout Nigeria.
Special provisions were made for 211 candidates with varying degrees of special needs, including visual impairment, impaired hearing, and albinism, ensuring they were able to take the exam under suitable conditions.

Of the total candidates, 39,790 were males and 41,114 were females, accounting for 49.18% and 50.82% respectively. The results processing revealed that 78,419 candidates (96.93%) had their results fully processed and released, while 2,485 candidates (3.07%) had a few subjects pending processing due to errors attributable to them. Efforts were underway to expedite the processing for these candidates.
Analysis of candidate performance indicated that 46,267 candidates (57.19%) obtained credit and above in at least five subjects, with or without English Language and Mathematics. Furthermore, 35,830 candidates (44.29%) achieved credit and above in a minimum of five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics.
The number of candidates meeting this criterion increased compared to previous years, showcasing a marginal performance improvement. However, it’s crucial to note that the examination structure differs from that of school candidates, as private candidates can register for fewer subjects based on their remediation needs.
Additionally, the results of 7,192 candidates (8.89% of total candidates) are withheld due to reported cases of examination malpractice, pending investigation and review by the appropriate council committee.
Candidates can check their results on the WAEC website (www.waecdirect.org) and access digital copies of their certificates through the Digital Certificate platform (www.waec.org). They may also apply for the printing of hard copies of their certificates via the WAEC Certificate Request Portal (e-Certman) website.

- Log on to https://www.waecdirect.org/
- Enter Examination number
- Select the Examination year as 2023
- Select Examination type as PRIVATE CANDIDATES
- Enter your PIN and serial number
- Click on submit to view your results
