Vice-Chancellor Vacancy at FUTO for 2026 Appointment. The office of Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO) will become vacant on 19 June 2026. In line with the provisions of the Federal Universities of Technology Act, Cap. F23, Volume 7, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004, the Governing Council of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri has commenced the process of appointing a new Vice-Chancellor.
Accordingly, applications are hereby invited from suitably qualified and interested candidates for appointment to the position of Vice-Chancellor, Federal University of Technology, Owerri.
About the University
The Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO) was established in 1980 and is one of the first three Federal Universities of Technology created by the Federal Government of Nigeria. The University is located approximately 25 kilometres from Owerri metropolis.
By statute, the University is empowered to mount academic and professional programmes leading to the award of diplomas, first degrees, postgraduate research degrees, and higher degrees. Its programmes emphasise planning, adaptability, technical competence, maintenance, development, and productive skills in engineering, science, agriculture, medical sciences, and related professional fields.
FUTO’s mandate is to produce socially mature graduates capable of understanding existing technologies, adapting and improving them, and developing new technological solutions to meet national and global needs.
Mission Statement
The mission of FUTO is to function as a world-class university, distinguished by hands-on training and research, with the objective of helping to transform Nigeria’s economy from consumption-driven to production-driven, anchored on a strong technological base.
The Vice-Chancellor and the Role
The Vice-Chancellor is the Chief Executive and Chief Academic Officer of the University. The holder of the office serves as:
- Ex-Officio Chairman of the Senate
- Ex-Officio Chairman of the Congregation
- Member of the University Governing Council
The Vice-Chancellor provides overall academic, administrative, and strategic leadership for the institution.
Qualifications and Personal Attributes Required
A candidate for the post of Vice-Chancellor must possess a sound university education from a recognised university and demonstrate strong capacity for human and material resource management.
Specifically, the candidate must meet the following requirements:
- Be an acclaimed scholar and a Professor of high repute, with appropriate academic qualifications, including a Ph.D., or for medical professionals, a Postgraduate Medical Fellowship, supported by publications of national and international standard.
- Be a Professor in a discipline relevant to FUTO’s academic programmes, with not less than 15 years of senior academic-related experience, including at least 10 years as a Professor. A letter of promotion to Professorship must be attached.
- Demonstrate respect for merit and the ability to uphold it without fear or favour, even under pressure.
- Show evidence of an enterprising spirit, including the ability to attract funds and other resources for the growth and development of the University.
- Possess the capacity to foster harmonious relationships between staff and students, and between the University and its host communities.
- Be able to build and sustain effective working relationships across all segments of the University community without ethnic, religious, or other bias.
- Present a clear vision and a realistic, implementable development plan for the University.
- Demonstrate the ability to drive cutting-edge research, promote innovation, and establish productive linkages with reputable global universities and industries.
- Be a person of proven integrity, probity, and moral standing.
- Command respect and provide strong academic and administrative leadership.
- Be in excellent physical and mental health, capable of withstanding the demands of the office. Applicants must submit a medical fitness certificate issued by a physician in a recognised public health institution.
- Possess strong information and communication technology (ICT) competence and appreciate its relevance in modern academic administration.
- Be capable, at all times, of advising the University Council on matters relating to projects, finance, property, and general administration.
- Not be more than 64 years of age as at 19 June 2026, the date the appointment is expected to take effect.
Tenure and Conditions of Service
The Vice-Chancellor shall hold office for a single, non-renewable term of five (5) years only. The terms and conditions of service shall be as specified in the letter of appointment.
Salary, allowances, and other conditions of service shall be those applicable to Vice-Chancellors of Federal Universities in Nigeria, as determined by the Federal Government and/or the Governing Council of the University from time to time.
Method of Application
Interested candidates who meet the stated requirements must apply strictly under the following conditions:
- Each application must be submitted in thirty (30) hard copies of the Curriculum Vitae, each copy signed and dated by the applicant, with a passport photograph attached to every copy.
- Each Curriculum Vitae must clearly state the names and addresses of three (3) referees.
- Each referee must be requested by the applicant to forward a confidential report on the candidate’s character, academic competence, and managerial ability directly to the Registrar.
- Each referee’s report must be enclosed in a sealed envelope, clearly marked at the top left corner:
“POST OF VICE-CHANCELLOR – REFEREES REPORT” - Each application must include thirty (30) copies of the applicant’s “Vision for the University / Mission Statement.”
- Where a candidate is identified and nominated by the Search Team, the application must also include a written letter of consent, duly signed by the candidate.
