About The University of Manchester Equity and Merit Scholarships:
Equity and Merit Scholarships are for academically excellent students who have the potential to make a significant contribution to sustainable development in their home countries. The awards are intended for those who cannot afford to study in Manchester without a scholarship. Women are particularly encouraged to apply. There are two types of scholarships:
- Full-time, on-campus master’s (one-year duration)
- Part-time, distance learning master’s (three to five years duration)

Eligibility Criteria:
Applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria:
- Be a resident citizen of Ethiopia, Malawi, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, or Zimbabwe, and have not previously studied outside of Africa (training of six months or less does not count).
- Have at least two years of professional experience related to the chosen field of study (this does not include unpaid internships or voluntary work).
- Hold a bachelor’s degree (must have graduated before September 2023) with an overall excellent grade, typically in the top 10% of the class.
- Be committed to returning home and demonstrate the potential to make a positive impact on the future of their home country.
- Have a clear idea of how studying at Manchester will benefit both their career and the wider community.

Benefits of the Award:
Successful applicants will receive:
- 40 scholarships (30 for full-time study and 10 for online study) across various courses in engineering, environment, health sciences, development, education, textiles, and law.
- Scholarships covering full tuition fees.
- For students studying in Manchester, the scholarship includes return international airfares, living expenses, and visas.
Duration of the Award:
- 1 to 3 years, depending on the scholarship type.

- Applications for September 2025 entry will open on 1 August 2024 and close on 31 August 2024. You can view a sample application form here to help you prepare.
- If you meet the eligibility requirements for the Equity and Merit Scholarship program, you will be invited to make an academic application for your chosen master’s course. Do not apply for academic admission until directed to do so.
