UNIPORT PGD and MSc in Counselling Psychology 2023/2024

INTRODUCTION

The Counselling and Human Development Centre (CHDEC) was established on the 30th of November, 2021, to align the University of Port Harcourt with its contemporaries and fulfill the criteria set by the National Universities Commission (NUC) for a Counselling Centre. The PGD and M.Sc. programs in Counselling Psychology have been approved by the University Senate.

OBJECTIVES

The Centre functions as an academic, career, and mental health development hub with a dedicated mission to assist graduate students in exploring opportunities and acquiring skills that enable them to make a successful impact in various specialized areas after graduation. The main goal is to equip graduate students with practical skills and professional expertise in specific areas that translate into the necessary competence and relevance in the ever-evolving field of Counselling.

AVAILABLE POST GRADUATE DEGREE PROGRAMS

  1. Post Graduate Diploma (PGD) in Counselling Psychology
  2. Master’s Degree (M.Sc.) in specialized areas, including:
  • School Counselling
  • Marital, Couple and Family (Relationship) Counselling
  • Child and Adolescent Counselling
  • Addiction and Rehabilitation Counselling
  • Clinical and Mental Health Counselling
  • Gerontological and Grief Counselling
  • Social Work and Rehabilitation Counselling

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

  • Candidates with a Bachelor’s degree from a recognized University with a minimum of Third Class Honours or a Higher National Diploma (HND) from a recognized Polytechnic with a minimum of Upper Credit in Social Science and Education or any related field are eligible for the Post Graduate Diploma (PGD).
  • Admission to the Master’s Degree in Counselling Psychology is open to all candidates holding a B.Sc./B.Ed in Social Sciences, Education, and other related disciplines with at least a second-class lower division from a recognized University or a Post Graduate Diploma (PGD) in Social Work, Management, Social Sciences, and Education (PGDE).

MODE OF STUDY AND PROGRAM DURATION

The program offers a flexible modular hybrid format combining onsite and real-time video conferencing, providing students with excellent flexibility in their study schedules.

  • The full-time program has a minimum duration of 12 calendar months and a maximum of 24 calendar months.
  • The part-time program has a minimum duration of 18 calendar months and a maximum of 36 calendar months, during which students are expected to complete the required modules and conduct an individual research project.

METHOD OF APPLICATION

Application forms can be obtained from the CHDEC office (Ground Floor, Central Instrument Laboratory Building, near Procurement Office, adjacent to Uniport Bottling Company), Abuja Campus, upon submission of a non-refundable application fee of Twenty-five Thousand Naira (N25,000), payable to the CHDEC account (Account Number: 1100256678), U & C Microfinance Bank Ltd, University of Port Harcourt.
