In a thought-provoking lecture at the University of Abuja (UniAbuja), Vice Chancellor Prof. Abdul-Rasheed Na’Allah highlighted the pressing need for the educational community to fully embrace advanced technology, with a special focus on the automotive industry. The remarks were made during the university’s 27th Pre-Convocation Lecture held in Abuja.

Prof. Na’Allah emphasized that Nigeria possesses the necessary resources and technical expertise to cultivate robust technological innovations. He urged Nigerians to contemplate the path forward and harness the nation’s potential.
The vice chancellor pointed out that Nigeria’s railway system was more advanced 20 to 50 years ago than it is today, underscoring the significance of advancing automotive technology.
Guest lecturer Jelani Aliyu, Director-General of the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC), echoed these sentiments. He stressed that Nigerians play a pivotal role in shaping a new, technologically advanced Nigeria characterized by peace, progress, and prosperity.
Mr. Aliyu encouraged citizens to imagine this brighter future, emphasizing that Nigeria possesses the capabilities to rival developed nations globally. He decried the notion that Nigeria’s problems are insurmountable, asserting that the nation should be defined by its inherent potential and achievements.
He further expressed that technology, especially in areas like energy, agriculture, transportation, and housing, can expedite Nigeria’s transformation into a more advanced nation. He passionately advocated for the adoption of advanced technologies in the automotive sector and discussed his commitment to advancing vehicle electrification in Nigeria.
Mr. Aliyu revealed that NADDC has established 100% solar-powered Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Stations at three Nigerian universities and is working on a fourth hybrid station at its headquarters. Discussions are also underway with UniAbuja to install another solar-powered EV Charging Station on campus.
He encouraged graduates to fearlessly embrace and develop advanced technology, emphasizing that they have the potential to be agents of positive change in Nigeria.
In his address, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, represented by Danlami Hayyo, Secretary of Education, FCTA, urged graduates to utilize their knowledge and skills for the betterment of the nation. He commended UniAbuja for its consistent efforts to address the challenges facing the FCT.
The lecture, enriched by Prof. Nkem Azuike’s citation of the guest lecturer, recognized Jelani Aliyu’s significant contributions to Nigeria’s automotive sector. He lauded Mr. Aliyu for attracting over $1 billion in private investments from automotive companies, resulting in a combined production capacity of over 400,000 units per year, spanning various vehicle models and configurations.
The event concluded with the presentation of plaques to Mr. Aliyu by Vice Chancellor Prof. Abdul-Rasheed Na’Allah.
