The program aims to train highly qualified teachers and researchers in Economics for the English-speaking West African subregion. This initiative is part of a larger program that seeks to provide top-notch training in economics by African universities for countries in sub-Saharan Africa.
ELIGIBILITY
The Collaborative Ph.D. Program (CPP) in Economics for the academic year 2022/2023 at the University of Ibadan is open to citizens of English-speaking West African countries who are affiliated with eligible organizations engaged in economics education, research, and economic policy management. These organizations include universities, research institutes, and government agencies involved in economic management. Limited spaces are also available for applicants from other English-speaking countries across Africa.
There are three categories of eligible applicants for the program:
(i) Applicants from eligible public sector organizations.
(ii) Applicants attached to or sponsored by eligible private institutions or organizations as part of their staff development programs.
(iii) Independent applicants who are self-sponsored in the program.
PROGRAM CONTENT
The Ph.D. program requires candidates to complete both compulsory and elective courses in Economics at the Ph.D. level and pass examinations in these courses. They must also pass a comprehensive examination at the end of the coursework, successfully defend a Ph.D. thesis proposal at a Departmental seminar, and write a Ph.D. dissertation under supervision. The dissertation will be defended at an oral examination for the award of a Ph.D. degree in Economics by the University of Ibadan.

The Collaborative Ph.D. Programme is offered at the University of Ibadan.
FINANCIAL SUPPORT
There are two categories of financial support available to students in the program on a competitive basis:
(i) Scholarship: Applicants from eligible public sector organizations can apply for and be considered for a full or partial scholarship awarded by the AERC.
(ii) Ph.D. Thesis Research Grant 1: All students enrolled in the program are eligible to apply for and be considered for this grant. The award is based on the assessed quality and potential development impact of their approved thesis proposal.
ADMISSION CRITERIA
Admission to the Collaborative Ph.D. Programme is competitive. The criteria for admitting students to the program include the following:
- Applicants must have a good honors degree in Economics or a related field from a recognized university.
- Applicants must also have a good Master’s degree in Economics (with a coursework component) from a recognized university.
- Eligible candidates may be required to take a selection test and/or attend an oral examination conducted by the Department of Economics at the University of Ibadan.
APPLICATION PROCEDURE
Completed application forms must be accompanied by the following documents:
- Certified copies of academic certificates and transcripts.
- Three letters of recommendation from senior university academics who have taught the applicant.
- A detailed Curriculum Vitae (CV) of the applicant.
- Evidence of attachment to or sponsorship from an eligible institution. Applicants must provide evidence of sponsorship or financial capability before the admission process can be finalized.
- A 5-page statement of research interest.
HOW TO APPLY
Foreign applicants, both within and outside Nigeria, should follow steps 1 to 3 above to obtain an invoice and make payment using a bank draft or bank cheque of US$160.00 payable to the Postgraduate College, University of Ibadan. The necessary bank details are provided for making the payment.
The deadline for submitting completed application forms is July 21, 2023. Application forms can be sent by courier or personally delivered to the Postgraduate College, University of Ibadan. Applicants will be notified of the progress of their applications through their provided email addresses.
