What is the LExS Scholarship?
The LExS program aims to attract outstanding students worldwide to Leiden University. It is available for Master’s degree candidates, excluding LLM (non-advanced) and MSc programs at Leiden Law School.

Who Can Apply?
To qualify, applicants must:
- Citizenship: Be a non-EEA/EFTA citizen.
- Program Admission: Have applied for admission to a Leiden University Master’s program.
- Academic Excellence: Demonstrate outstanding academic performance, typically reflected by a high GPA or equivalent.
- Motivation: Provide a strong motivation letter outlining academic achievements, personal goals, and reasons for applying for LExS. Leadership potential and extracurricular involvement may also be required.
- Deadline Compliance: Submit applications and all required documents before the specified deadline.
Selection Process
- Faculty selection committees will nominate recipients within six weeks after the LExS deadline.
- Applicants will be notified of the outcome via email:
- November (for February programs)
- April (for September programs)
Scholarship Details
Benefits:
The scholarship is partially funded, offering three award levels:
- €10,000 of the tuition fee.
- €15,000 of the tuition fee.
- Total tuition fee minus statutory tuition fee.
- Note: This is not a full scholarship. Non-EEA recipients must provide proof of sufficient funds for visa and residence permit applications.
Duration:
The scholarship is awarded for the full duration of the study program.

- Apply for Admission:
- Submit an online application for a Master’s program at Leiden University.
- Pay the applicable application fee.
- Begin your application early, as it may take up to two days to process.
- Access Scholarship Section:
- After submitting your application, return to the “Apply” screen in the online application portal.
- Click on Scholarships to access the LExS application.
- Submit LExS Application:
- Indicate your interest in LExS.
- Upload a motivation letter (PDF, max. 500 words).
- Complete the scholarship application before the deadline.
- Multiple Applications:
- If applying for more than one specialization, submit separate LExS applications for each, including individual motivation letters.
