Located in Philadelphia, SIMS is a world-renowned research hub dedicated to manuscript studies. It provides scholars with access to cutting-edge digital tools, centuries-old manuscripts, and an international scholarly community.

Fellows will primarily work with rare manuscripts, particularly from the Lawrence J. Schoenberg Collection, while also benefiting from Philadelphia’s extensive research network, including:

Fellowship Benefits
The 2025 cycle includes a new collaboration with the American Trust for the British Library (ATBL), allowing SIMS fellows to apply for an additional $2,500 grant to conduct further research at the British Library.
Funding & Duration
- Stipend: $5,000 for a one-month research residency (minimum 4 work weeks)
- Fellowship Period: July 1, 2025 – June 30, 2026
- Location: On-site at the Schoenberg Institute, University of Pennsylvania Libraries
- Access to: Rare manuscripts, digital humanities tools, and scholarly resources
Proposals that integrate digital tools such as BASIRA, VCEditor, the Schoenberg Database, or AI-driven methods are highly encouraged.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must:
Live outside the greater Philadelphia area Hold a PhD or equivalent professional degree by the fellowship start date Be an independent scholar with a strong academic record Provide a letter of support confirming PhD completion (if not yet graduated)
Collaborative applications are welcome, but note that the $5,000 stipend must be shared.
