JAMB isn’t everything, especially when it comes to securing admission into Nigerian universities. And yes, I know this because I’ve been helping students gain admission for the past 8 years (not to brag, it’ll be 9 this year).
And I’m sure there are tons of posts and videos out there telling you the same thing, but this is just another sign to you, because many students still miss it.
Soft Factors
Not to waste so much time, getting a good JAMB score is good — not just good, amazing. But do you know what is better?
Ticking other boxes in the invisible admission checklist.
These are the things schools don’t always say out loud, but they are quietly considering when deciding who gets admitted and who doesn’t.
O’level Grades
Your university, polytechnic, or college of nursing is most likely going to look into your A’s and B’s in your core subjects as a determinant for giving you admission.
Sorry to burst your bubble, but it’s just how the system works.
You want to study Law? You really have no business scoring a “C” in English Language or Literature and expecting things to go smoothly.
Even if your JAMB score is strong, weak O’level grades can quietly work against you.
Applicant Volume
That your best friend you want to apply to the same school and course with isn’t your bestie on paper.
They are your competition.
And sometimes, just one mark difference between two of you can mean one person gets admitted while the other tries again next year.
So while you are studying hard, you also need to realise something:
The University of Ibadan doesn’t care about besties.
They are picking the best candidates based on their criteria — simple. So while you are doing best friends for life, you need to double the reading grind!
Before You Go…
Before I leave you pondering on this, I keep telling my students at the academy:
“Be ready to JUMP SHIP.”
If the stars aren’t aligning over a course or a school, don’t sit there forcing it.
Find somewhere else.
Or find something else to study.
Because admission is not about stubbornness — it’s about playing the game smart.
Final Thought
Getting a high JAMB score is powerful, no doubt.
But admission goes beyond that.
If you really want to secure admission, focus on the full picture, not just one exam.
That’s where most students get it wrong.
