What is the Shanghai Government Scholarship at ECNU?
The SGS 2025 at ECNU supports outstanding international students pursuing undergraduate degrees. While most Chinese-taught programs are eligible, some exceptions apply, so read on to ensure your program qualifies.
Eligible Programs
The scholarship is open to all full-time undergraduate programs taught in Chinese, except:
- 2+2 or 1+3 joint degree programs
- English-taught bachelor’s degree programs
- BA programs under the School of International Chinese Studies

Scholarship Benefits
The SGS 2025 offers two packages:
- Type A – Full Scholarship:
- Full tuition fee waiver
- Free on-campus accommodation (economic double room with shared restroom) or off-campus living allowance of RMB 700/month
- Monthly living allowance: RMB 2,500
- Comprehensive medical insurance: RMB 800/year
- Type B – Partial Scholarship:
- Full tuition fee waiver
- Comprehensive medical insurance: RMB 800/year
Eligibility Criteria
To qualify, you must:
- Be a non-Chinese citizen in good health
- Demonstrate strong academic and behavioral performance
- Meet age requirements:
- Pre-college programs: Under 23 with a high school diploma
- Undergraduate programs: Under 25 with a high school diploma
- Meet Chinese language proficiency requirements for your chosen major:
- Applicants with HSK Level 3 can join a 1-year fully funded pre-college program; if major requirements aren’t met afterward, you’ll continue as a Chinese language student
