The decision was made during the 18th Council meeting on September 18, 2024. The Council, after extensive consultations with key stakeholders, took this action based on recommendations from a committee appointed by the state government to assess the institution’s status.
The committee raised several concerns about the impact of the university status on the institution’s ability to serve students, especially those from non-metropolitan areas. Issues such as the potential loss of experienced lecturers, salary conflicts, and administrative challenges were highlighted.
The Council noted that similar institutions across Nigeria offer degree programmes while remaining colleges of education. This “dual mode” system, regulated by the NCE Body, allows colleges to provide both traditional and degree-level education without transitioning into full universities.

Students currently enrolled at Sa’adatu Rimi College of Education will continue their studies uninterrupted. The transition will not affect their courses or academic progress. The degrees awarded will remain valid, and students can expect the institution to continue offering both existing and new degree programmes. Changes in Management
Following the conversion, His Excellency, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, the Executive Governor of Kano State, approved the dissolution of the university’s management. The Vice-Chancellor has been instructed to hand over administration to the most senior deputy until further notice. This restructuring aims to ensure the institution remains focused on providing quality education.
