OPay Launches ₦60 Million Scholarship Programme for BUK Students; On Tuesday, 9th September 2025, OPay Digital Services Limited officially launched a groundbreaking ₦60 million scholarship programme for students of Bayero University, Kano (BUK). The initiative is designed to ease financial burdens and inspire academic excellence among Nigerian undergraduates.
The landmark partnership was formalized with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Haruna Musa, on behalf of the University. The scholarship became a reality through the collaborative efforts of the Students’ Union Government (SUG) led by President Abdullahi Usman Baba, and the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS).
BUK Recognized as a Key Beneficiary
Speaking at the event, the Vice-Chancellor praised OPay for selecting BUK as one of the beneficiaries of this life-changing programme.
“This scholarship will go a long way in boosting the morale of our students. I urge the beneficiaries to use this opportunity wisely, and I also encourage OPay to sustain this generous gesture,” Professor Musa stated.
Details of the OPay Scholarship Scheme
According to Mr. Itoro Udo, OPay’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Manager, the fintech giant—boasting over 16 million active users in Nigeria—is deeply committed to empowering young people through education.
He revealed that:
- BUK is one of 20 Nigerian universities selected for the 10-year scholarship scheme.
- The programme will award ₦300,000 each to 20 students every year for the next decade.
- A total of ₦60 million has been earmarked for Bayero University, Kano.
Stakeholders React
The Dean of Students’ Affairs, Professor Shamsuddeen Umar, described the intervention as “timely and highly impactful,” noting that many students face serious financial challenges in pursuit of their education.
The scholarship is expected to motivate outstanding students, reduce financial strain, and promote excellence across the university.
