NUC Approves Establishment of Faculty of Law at AKSU; The National Universities Commission (NUC) has granted approval for the establishment of a Faculty of Law at Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU), bringing the institution’s total number of faculties to 11.
The approval followed a successful resource verification exercise conducted by an NUC panel, which evaluated the university’s preparedness in terms of staffing, infrastructure, and other essential academic resources.
LL.B Programme to Commence in 2025/2026 Session
In a letter dated November 10, 2025, and addressed to the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor OtoAbasi E. Akpan, the NUC confirmed that AKSU is authorised to commence the full-time Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) programme at its Main Campus starting from the 2025/2026 academic session.
According to the letter:
“I am directed to inform the Vice-Chancellor that the Executive Secretary has considered and approved the establishment of the full-time mode of the LL.B Law Programme to be run in the Main Campus of the University with effect from the 2025/2026 academic session.”
The NUC also urged the University to ensure the provision of adequate human and material resources in accordance with the Core Curriculum and Minimum Academic Standards (CCMAS) for Nigerian universities.
Structure of the New Faculty
The newly established Faculty of Law will commence with three foundational departments:
- Private and Property Law
- Jurisprudence and International Law
- Commercial and Industrial Law
A Milestone Under the Acting Vice-Chancellor
This development marks another major achievement under the leadership of the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Akpan, who has been in office for just three months. Within this period, he has facilitated:
- The creation of the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies (6 departments)
- The establishment of the Faculty of Computing and Information Technology (5 departments)
- The accreditation and resource verification of more than 30 postgraduate and several undergraduate programmes
- The creation of over 30 Institutes and Centres aimed at enhancing research, innovation, and funding opportunities
