Nigerian Lawmakers Ask Tertiary Institutions To Suspend Academic Activities Due To Elections; The National Universities Commission (NUC), National Board for Technical Education (NABTE), National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE), and the Ministry of Education have been urged by lawmakers in the house of representatives to suspend academic activities in tertiary institutions nationwide so that students may vote in the upcoming general elections.

The legislators pointed out that by suspending academic activities, students—who, according to INEC, account for 40.8 percent of all newly registered voters—will be more likely to travel to the locations where their voting places are located and participate in the electioneering process.
Also, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was asked to make special arrangements for students to collect their PVCs.
The decision was made on January 26 after Kabir Ibrahim, a congressman for Kebbi’s Zuru/Fakai/Danko-Wasagu/Sakaba federal seat, won the adoption of his motion of urgent public concern.
The resolution was unanimously approved, and the house then ordered the committees in charge of tertiary education and elections to “liaise with the agencies to facilitate the process” and submit a report within a week.
