NABTEB GCE Registration Rules

Candidates should enter their information carefully because NABTEB places restrictions on changes after registration.

A candidate may make a maximum of three changes to trades or subjects after registration.

However, bio-data cannot be changed.

Candidates should therefore confirm their names, date of birth, gender, address and other personal information before submitting the registration.

NABTEB may also reject a candidate’s script for a paper if the candidate was not properly registered for that paper.

Candidates must upload a coloured passport photograph during registration.

The photograph must:

  • Have a red background.
  • Measure 2 cm by 1.5 cm.
  • Be a proper passport photograph.

This includes:

NABTEB Trade and Subject Registration Rules

Candidates should register only for trades and subjects that are available at their approved examination centre.

Examination centres are permitted to register candidates only for trades for which they have approval.

If a school or college registers candidates for an unapproved trade, the affected entries may be invalidated.

Candidates should also check their registration records carefully to ensure that the correct papers appear on their entries.

A candidate who registers for multiple or double trades at the same time risks having the affected registration invalidated.

Materials Candidates Can Take to the Examination Hall

Candidates are expected to provide their own basic writing materials.

These include:

  • Pen
  • Pencil
  • Eraser
  • Ink
  • Ruler
  • Mathematical set

Candidates taking drawing examinations should also provide the required drawing equipment, including:

  • Drawing board
  • Tee-square
  • Metric scale ruler
  • Other required drawing instruments

Slide rules may be used where necessary.

A simple, non-programmable, noiseless and cordless calculator is permitted where required.

Candidates should check the specific requirements for their papers before arriving at the examination centre.

Candidates must not take GSM phones or other electronic gadgets into the examination hall.

The following are also prohibited unless NABTEB specifically permits them for a particular paper:

  • Textbooks
  • Scripts
  • Plain sheets of paper
  • Unauthorised materials

Candidates should take only the materials permitted for the examination.

NABTEB also states that it is not responsible for books, bags or other belongings brought to an examination centre.

NABTEB GCE Examination Dates and Times

Candidates should confirm the date and starting time of each paper from the official examination timetable, their examination centre or NABTEB’s official communication.

Morning papers generally begin at 9:00 a.m.

Candidates should arrive at the examination centre at least 30 minutes before the scheduled starting time.

Where the timetable specifies 9:00 a.m. for practical or oral examinations, candidates should also report early enough to complete the required arrangements.

What Happens If a Candidate Arrives Late?

Candidates will not be admitted into the examination hall 30 minutes after a paper has started.

Candidates are also not permitted to leave the examination hall immediately after starting a paper.

For essay examinations, candidates cannot leave until 30 minutes before the scheduled finishing time.

For objective examinations, candidates cannot leave until 10 minutes before the end of the allocated time.

Where a candidate leaves the examination because of a confirmed health condition, the centre supervisor must ensure that the question paper and the candidate’s worked materials do not leave the examination hall.

NABTEB Admission Printout Is Compulsory

Every candidate must present an admission printout whenever reporting for an examination paper.

Candidates should download and print the document before the examination period and bring it to the examination hall for every registered paper.

It is therefore important to keep the admission printout safely throughout the examination.

Rules for Candidates Inside the Examination Hall

Candidates are expected to maintain proper conduct during the examination.

A candidate who engages in disorderly conduct may be expelled from the examination centre.

Candidates must not communicate with one another during an examination.

If a candidate needs assistance or clarification, they should raise their hand and attract the attention of the supervisor or invigilator.

Candidates should also avoid bringing unnecessary personal belongings to the centre because NABTEB does not accept responsibility for books, bags or other items left at an examination venue.

How Candidates Should Complete Examination Materials

Candidates must correctly write their identification details on examination materials.

Depending on the paper, these details may include:

  • Name
  • Centre number
  • Candidate number
  • Paper code

The requirement applies to materials such as:

  • Answer booklets
  • Objective answer sheets
  • Graph sheets
  • Drawing sheets
  • Continuation sheets
  • Other examination materials supplied for the paper

Candidates should not use office pins to hold examination papers together.

Where papers need to be attached, twine will be provided by the supervisor or invigilator.

Candidates are also responsible for taking care of examination furniture and equipment. Anyone who damages examination property may be required to pay for its repair or replacement.

NABTEB Examination Malpractice

Candidates are required to comply with NABTEB’s examination regulations and the provisions of the Examination Malpractice Act No. 33 of 1999.

NABTEB may cancel or withhold a candidate’s result, either completely or partly, where examination malpractice or other irregularities are established.

A candidate who disobeys examination instructions may be directed by the supervisor to stop work, and the matter may be reported to NABTEB.

Candidates can also report examination malpractice or irregularities involving examination officials or school authorities directly to NABTEB, provided they have supporting evidence.

Requirements for NABTEB Practical Examinations

Candidates sitting for practical examinations are expected to provide the tools required for their practical work.

ICT candidates may be permitted to provide their own computers or laptops.

NABTEB will send cutting lists for practical papers to examination centres. Candidates should communicate with the principal or proprietor of their examination centre regarding the materials required for practical examinations.

The Board will calculate the cost of materials required for each practical paper and communicate the amount to examination centres.

Candidates are advised to visit their examination centres at least one week before their practical examinations so that arrangements for the required materials can be made.

What Should Candidates Do About Wrong or Missing Entries?

Candidates should check their registration records before the examination.

NABTEB will not issue a result for a paper that a candidate did not register for.

If a candidate registered for a paper but their name does not appear on the Marks and Attendance Sheet, the matter should be reported to the supervisor.

Candidates should also immediately report:

  • Wrong examination papers
  • Misspelt names
  • Incorrect entries
  • Other registration discrepancies

Candidates should not wait until after the examination to report an error that could have been corrected at the centre.

NABTEB Complaints and Appeals

Candidates can submit complaints and appeals concerning registration, examinations and results.

Registration-related complaints must reach NABTEB before registration closes.

Complaints concerning examination results must be submitted within six months of the release of the results. NABTEB states that complaints submitted after this period will not be considered.

Letters of complaint or appeal should be addressed to the Registrar/Chief Executive, NABTEB, Benin City.

The correspondence should contain sufficient information to identify the candidate, including:
