MOUAU shut down indefinitely following protest; The Management of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike (MOUAU) in Umuahia, Abia State, has taken the decision to indefinitely close the institution and suspend all academic activities.
This action, announced by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Maduebibisi Iwe, aims to prevent the potential threat posed by hoodlums who might exploit student protests to cause harm to innocent individuals and damage property.
Reports indicate that the unrest began on Monday, February 5, 2024, with students protesting against the recently implemented hike in school fees and the enforcement of a “No Fees, No Exams” policy by the university’s management.

Initially confined to the university campus on Monday, the protest escalated on Tuesday, February 6, as students blocked the heavily trafficked Ikot Ekpene/Umuahia road, causing significant traffic congestion.
Some students expressed that, given the challenging circumstances, they had appealed to university authorities to allow them to sit for exams while they continued efforts to settle their fees before the end of the examination period.
However, their requests were reportedly disregarded. Tensions heightened when the Vice Chancellor personally intervened to remove students from examination halls due to non-payment of fees, triggering the eruption of protests.
