Imperial College London Global Development Fellowship 2026; The Global Development Fellowship is a prestigious initiative by Imperial College London (ICL) designed to support doctoral candidates from low-income countries. This fully funded fellowship offers an opportunity for PhD students to undertake short-term research placements at Imperial College London.

Fellowship Overview

The ICL Global Development Fellowship provides comprehensive financial support to beneficiaries, including:

  • A monthly stipend of £1,900
  • A one-off £200 arrival payment in the UK
  • Return economy class airfare
  • Coverage of standard visa application fees
  • Biometrics Residence Permit (BRP) payment
  • Funding for travel to visa application centres

Placements last 2 to 4 months, must begin in March 2026, and must be completed before 31 July 2026.


Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  1. Be a current doctoral student.
  2. Hold a passport and be a permanent resident of a Least Developed Country (LDC) or Lower Middle Income Country (LMIC) according to the OECD ODA Recipients List. Upper Middle Income Countries are not eligible.
  3. Be studying for their PhD at an institution located in an LDC or LMIC.
  4. Have completed more than 12 months of PhD study by the time the placement begins.
  5. Obtain a Letter of Support from an academic host supervisor at Imperial College London, signed by the Head of Department.
  6. Provide a Letter of Recommendation from their current PhD supervisor.
  7. Ensure the supervisor’s recommendation letter confirms the applicant has a sufficient level of English proficiency to effectively participate in the placement.

Fellowship Value and Benefits

The fellowship covers the full cost of the placement, including:

  • £1,900 monthly stipend

  • Travel support for visa processing

Placements must run between 2–4 months, beginning March 2026 and ending no later than 31 July 2026.
