About the Commonwealth Short Story Prize
Established in 2012 by Commonwealth Writers, a project of the Commonwealth Foundation, this annual prize celebrates and recognizes emerging literary voices from the 54 Commonwealth countries. The competition regularly attracts 6,000 to 7,000 entries worldwide.
Prizes
- Overall Winner: £5,000
- Regional Winners: £2,500 each (from five regions)
- Winning stories will be published in Granta, a renowned literary magazine.
Eligibility Criteria
- Citizenship: Open to citizens of a Commonwealth country or stateless individuals residing in one.
- Dual Citizenship: Judging will be based on the region of permanent residence.
- Age Requirement: Must be 18 or older by 1st November 2024.
- Unpublished Work: Stories must remain unpublished in any language until 1st May 2025.
- Past Winners: Overall winners are not eligible to re-enter. Regional winners cannot submit if they’ve won three times.
- Employees of the Commonwealth Foundation cannot enter.
- Other Competitions: Entries that have been shortlisted or won other competitions can be submitted if unpublished.
