FUTA VC commissions university’s new hostel
The commissioning ceremony took place on July 31, 2023, behind the Awosika female undergraduate hostel, Obanla. During the event, Mr. Olufemi Olaosebikan, the President of the Cooperative Society, expressed gratitude for the realization of the building project, attributing its success to divine intervention.
Mr. Olaosebikan emphasized that the Cooperative Society had a vision beyond meeting the needs of its members, aiming to make a lasting impact on the University. The idea for the hostel project was initially discussed at the Coop’s Ordinary General Meeting in 2020 and was brought to fruition after its Annual General Meeting in November 2021. By constructing this hostel, the FUTA CMS has significantly enhanced its contribution to student welfare and solidified its commitment to the University’s social responsibility.
An important highlight was the fact that the Cooperative Society did not resort to borrowing funds for the project; instead, they formed partnerships with construction companies, including FUTA BDC, for supplies. Olaosebikan urged future occupants of the hostel to fully utilize its facilities and capitalize on the ongoing registration opportunities.
Professor Stephen Anjorin, a former President of the Cooperative, lauded the newly built structure as a remarkable addition to the University’s landscape and a remarkable achievement for the Cooperative society. He praised the unity and cooperation among members, underlining that their collective dedication to humanitarian values was instrumental in making the building a reality.
Commending the Cooperative Society for its proactive leadership, Vice Chancellor Adenike Oladiji expressed her gratitude that private investors like FUTA CMS were stepping in to alleviate the University’s challenges, such as inadequate and unsafe off-campus living environments. She acknowledged that students often voiced concerns about security and living conditions, and the new hostel was a significant stride in addressing these issues.
Oladiji noted that the Cooperative’s contribution aligns with the University’s mission to enhance student experiences on campus, with improved accommodations being a core aspect. She called on other potential investors to follow suit and contribute to the ongoing efforts of the University in providing essential facilities.
The hostel itself boasts a contemporary design and is outfitted with modern amenities. It consists of two wings, each comprising eight rooms, totaling 64-bed spaces with four individuals per room. The facilities include robust internet connectivity, a spacious conference room, 16 well-appointed toilets and bathrooms, a modern kitchenette and laundry facilities, a dependable borehole, and a consistent power supply.
