General FUHSO Postgraduate Admission Requirements
Applicants must have at least five credit passes in relevant subjects, including English Language and Mathematics, obtained in not more than two sittings in WASC, NECO or GCE.
Nigerian applicants must also provide evidence of completion of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme or a certificate of exemption or exclusion.
Applicants must additionally satisfy the specific academic requirements for their chosen postgraduate programme.
FUHSO PGD Admission Requirements
Candidates applying for a Postgraduate Diploma programme must have:
- A minimum of a Third-Class Bachelor’s degree in a relevant or related discipline specified by the department or institute; or
- An HND with at least Lower Credit in a relevant discipline, subject to the regulations of the FUHSO Postgraduate Board.
The relevant department may also require applicants to pass a written or oral interview.
FUHSO Master’s Admission Requirements
Applicants for Master’s programmes must possess one of the following, as applicable to their chosen programme:
- Bachelor’s degree
- MBBS
- BDS
- B.NSc
- BMLS
- D.Pharm.
- Equivalent qualification specified by the relevant department or institute
The minimum degree classification is Second-Class Lower Division.
Candidates with a Third-Class Bachelor’s degree or HND at Lower Credit may also be considered if they possess a relevant PGD with a minimum CGPA of 3.00/5.00.
Applicants may be required to pass a written or oral interview as determined by the department.
FUHSO Ph.D. Admission Requirements
Candidates seeking Ph.D. admission must meet the academic requirements specified by FUHSO.
An applicant with an academic Master’s degree and:
- 60% or above, or
- CGPA of at least 4.00/5.00
falls within the Ph.D. grade.
Candidates with 55%–59% or a CGPA of 3.50–3.99/5.00 fall within the MPhil/Ph.D. grade. Such candidates must conduct an approved research pilot study, present the findings at a seminar and submit a report for assessment through a conversion examination. A 60% pass mark is required, and the process must be completed within nine months before Ph.D. admission can be considered.
Candidates with an M.Phil grade of 50%–54% or a CGPA of 3.00–3.49/5.00 must complete an approved research study within 12 months, present the findings at a seminar and defend the thesis orally. A 60% pass mark and one published article are required before Ph.D. admission can be considered.
Medical doctors who have passed the Part I Fellowship Examination, in addition to holding an MBBS degree, may be admitted directly into Ph.D. programmes.
Each Ph.D. applicant must also:
- Submit a concept note or preliminary proposal of at least 500 words in the chosen area of specialisation.
- Pass a written or oral interview where required by the department.
FUHSO Postgraduate Programme Duration
The duration depends on the programme and mode of study.
Postgraduate Diploma
- Full-time: Minimum of 2 semesters; maximum of 4 semesters
- Part-time: Minimum of 3 semesters; maximum of 6 semesters
Master’s Degree
- Full-time: Minimum of 3 semesters; maximum of 5 semesters
- Part-time: Minimum of 5 semesters; maximum of 8 semesters
Doctor of Philosophy
- Full-time: Minimum of 6 semesters; maximum of 8 semesters
- Part-time: Minimum of 8 semesters; maximum of 10 semesters
Any extension beyond the maximum study period requires Senate approval, following a recommendation from the department, faculty and School of Postgraduate Studies.

Admission Through Inter-University Transfer
FUHSO permits postgraduate admission through inter-university transfer, provided the applicant meets the minimum admission requirements for the intended programme.
Previously earned course credits may be transferred where the learning outcomes and course contents correspond to the relevant FUHSO courses.
However, credits for the following cannot be transferred:
