The web publishing giant WordPress has thrown open the doors to a thrilling new chapter with the debut of Telex, an experimental AI development tool. Unveiled by WordPress co-founder and Automattic CEO Matt Mullenweg at last week’s WordCamp US 2025 in Portland, Telex marks a significant step forward in the platform’s evolution.
Described by Mullenweg as a “V0 or Lovable, but specifically for WordPress”—a nod to trendy “vibe coding” platforms that harness AI for prompt-based software creation—this tool is already turning heads.
A Glimpse of Telex in Action
During his keynote, Mullenweg showcased Telex’s potential, demonstrating how it empowers users to craft Gutenberg blocks—those versatile building blocks of text, images, and columns that define WordPress sites. He highlighted a live example where a developer whipped up a sleek marketing animation, hinting at the tool’s creative possibilities.Accessible at telex.automattic.ai, Telex is tagged “experimental,” inviting users to input prompts that generate downloadable .zip files. These can be plugged into a WordPress site or tested via WordPress Playground, the browser-based platform that lets you run WordPress anywhere, no hosting required.
This launch builds on WordPress’s earlier pledge this year to assemble an AI team dedicated to crafting tools aligned with its long-term vision. Early testers, however, note that Telex is still rough around the edges—some projects faltered or needed tweaks to function fully. Undeterred, Mullenweg framed it as a prototype with massive potential.
AI and the WordPress Mission
Mullenweg’s passion for AI’s role in democratizing publishing shone through. “At the heart of WordPress’ mission is making the complex accessible—breaking down coding barriers, embracing every language, keeping it low-cost and open-source,” he explained.He sees Telex as a natural extension of this ethos, despite acknowledging the “scary” hype and bubble talk surrounding AI. “There’s a seed of something incredibly enabling here,” he added, his excitement palpable. “It’s an exhilarating time to build for WordPress.”
Beyond Telex, Mullenweg unveiled a simpler AI-powered WordPress help assistant, crafted in just a couple of hours during Contributor Day, and praised Perplexity’s Comet AI browser as a future-friendly interface for WordPress interactions.
Legal Shadows and Forward Momentum
The event wasn’t without its offstage drama. Mullenweg briefly addressed the ongoing legal tussle with hosting provider WP Engine, whom he accuses of profiting from WordPress’s ecosystem without fair contribution. Pushing for a trademark license to clarify customer confusion, he offered a curt update: “It’s winding through the legal system. I showed up to a settlement conference; the other CEO didn’t. That’s all I’ll say on this mess.”
