A review of the Govspend public payments portal by SaharaReporters has uncovered substantial tyre-related expenses by the President Bola Tinubu-led administration. The report reveals that a total of N366 million was spent on tyres over three separate days: May 21, 2024, June 22, 2023, and June 24, 2023.
On June 22, 2023, a single expenditure of N42.8 million was recorded for State House tyres. Just two days later, on June 24, an additional N86.2 million was spent on tyres, with the transaction labeled as ‘Purchase of Tyres to State House.’
Further review shows that on May 21, 2024, two payments were made by the Presidency. The first was N38 million for the supply of five armoured/bulletproof tyres (255-720-r490ac) for s600/222 vehicles. On the same day, another payment of N200.5 million was made for the supply of tyres for bulletproof vehicles to the State House in Abuja.
These findings highlight a total expenditure of N366 million on tyre purchases in just three days, as detailed on the Govspend platform.
The revelations have sparked concerns about the transparency and efficiency of public spending under the current administration. The tyre expenses add to growing worries about the Tinubu administration’s spending priorities, especially at a time when Nigeria is grappling with revenue shortages, increasing debt, and substantial debt servicing costs.
Despite promises of financial prudence, experts suggest that the government’s current spending patterns reflect a significant gap in achieving the desired fiscal discipline.
