Imagine opening your hive… and finding bright blue and green honey dripping out. That’s exactly what happened to beekeepers in Eastern France back in 2012.
Nobody had a clue what was going on. Was it pollution? A chemical spill? Some weird alien flower? 👀
The truth was way stranger…
The bees weren’t visiting wildflowers at all. They had discovered a biogas plant processing waste from a nearby M&M factory. Yes—our little buzzing friends were feasting on leftover candy shells. 🍬🐝
Result? Emerald and turquoise honeycombs. Gorgeous to look at, completely unsellable to eat.
One expert guessed the bees turned to candy because flowers were scarce that summer. Resourceful? Yes. Sustainable? Not at all.
So while the world got photos of magical rainbow honey, local beekeepers got stuck with a sticky problem—and a powerful reminder: when nature runs low, even bees will swap nectar for sugar.
