WhatsApp is rolling out a new security upgrade that lets users access their encrypted chat backups using passkeys. With this feature, you’ll be able to restore your WhatsApp data through biometric methods such as fingerprint, facial recognition, or your device’s screen lock code — eliminating the need to manually enter long passwords or search for encryption keys.
Previously, WhatsApp backups didn’t have any encryption protection, leaving chat histories vulnerable if stored on cloud platforms. That changed in 2021, when Meta introduced end-to-end encryption for chat backups, secured by either user-created passwords or 64-character encryption keys.
However, both methods required users to remember or securely store those credentials — something many found inconvenient during restoration. Passkeys simplify that process by tying authentication directly to your device’s built-in security, offering a more seamless and secure recovery experience.
WhatsApp, which surpassed 3 billion active users in May, says the feature will roll out gradually over the coming weeks and months.
To check if it’s available for your account, navigate to:
Settings > Chats > Chat backup > End-to-end encrypted backup — and see if the passkey option appears.This addition strengthens WhatsApp’s ongoing push to enhance user privacy and data protection while keeping convenience at the forefront.
