UNIZIK students protest sexual harassment; Some students from Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Awka protested at the school. They’re upset about sexual harassment and bullying happening at the school. They want the school’s leader, Prof. Charles Esimone, to show a report from a panel led by Prof. Obi Oguejiofor. This report found that some staff members did wrong things.
The students also asked the government to help because they say they’re often sexually harassed at the school. They’re frustrated that no action has been taken against the staff members mentioned in the report.
A student named Ugonna said that even though panels before had found staff members guilty of harassment, nothing happened to them. She’s wondering why these staff members are still working at the school. Ugonna also mentioned that even married women students are not safe from this behavior.
The students warned that if the Vice Chancellor and the school’s management don’t fire the guilty lecturers within two weeks, they will make the school very chaotic.
Some teachers who didn’t want to be named talked about their colleagues who were involved in this. They were worried that if these Lecturers weren’t punished, the harassment would continue. They said that the Vice Chancellor often forgives them and lets them off the hook.
The school organized a meeting with department heads and leaders to discuss this issue. They are taking it seriously and trying to find a solution.
The Vice-Chancellor admitted that there’s a problem of harassment in the school. He said that they’ve already fired a teacher from the Law Faculty because of this.
Efforts to reach the Vice Chancellor were unsuccessful. But his media aide, Emmanuel Ojukwu, confirmed that the school has a committee to deal with harassment cases. He said the school is strict about protecting students. He mentioned that students need to come forward and testify to take action against the guilty teachers. The school is being careful about handling the issue fairly and making sure justice is done. The Vice-Chancellor will talk to the staff about not harassing students anymore.
