UNIZIK Student Dies After Being Denied Access to Drugs Over N120,000

A tragic incident at Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, has left the campus community in mourning and sparked a demand for justice after the death of Ajana Isabella, a law student allegedly denied access to her essential medication due to an unpaid hostel fee.

Ajana, who was diabetic and lived at Elmada Hostel near the university, reportedly suffered a medical emergency after she was unable to retrieve her insulin. According to multiple student eyewitnesses, she and her roommates had misplaced their room key and urgently needed the hostel’s spare to access the life-saving drug.

When the students approached the hostel mistress—identified as Madam Bright—for help, she allegedly refused to hand over the spare key unless they paid a total of ₦120,000, a fee reportedly imposed on the room as a penalty. Each roommate was asked to pay ₦40,000 before the spare key would be released.

Despite the students’ repeated pleas and explanations that Ajana’s life was at risk, their request was allegedly ignored. As her condition worsened, efforts were made to rush her to the hospital, but she did not survive.

Ajana’s death has since provoked widespread outrage across the UNIZIK community. Students have described the incident as “avoidable” and “cruel,” condemning the actions of the hostel manager as grossly negligent and inhumane.

“This isn’t just negligence, this is wickedness,” one student said. “We explained that her insulin was locked in the room. We begged, yet she refused to give us the key unless we paid money we couldn’t immediately raise. That delay cost Isabella her life.”

The university administration has acknowledged the incident and stated that an internal investigation is underway. However, the current whereabouts of the hostel mistress remain unknown.

Students are calling on the school authorities, law enforcement, and human rights groups to ensure that Ajana’s death does not go unpunished.

“We want justice for Isabella. No student should ever have to die because of a fee or someone’s refusal to act in a moment of emergency,” another student added.

As investigations continue, the tragedy has prompted broader conversations about student welfare, private hostel regulation, and emergency response policies within and around Nigeria’s university campuses.
