Following the insistence of students at the University of Benin to maintain their demands for a 24-hour supply of electricity, which the University’s Senate has deemed unrealistic, the University has shut down academic activities indefinitely.

The management has directed students to vacate the hostels immediately, while all relevant units of the University are to take note and comply. However, non-teaching staff and staff on essential duties are not affected by the shutdown.

The students, who had two weeks until their first semester examinations, stated that the lack of consistent electricity was severely affecting their preparation. Additionally, the students called for a downward review of transport fares by the UNIBEN shuttle service, which had been increased effective July 1.

It was gathered that the university experienced a blackout due to issues with the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC), stemming from disputes over electricity billings. The monthly bill reportedly jumped from about N80 million to between N200 and N280 million, forcing the university to rely on power generators and rationalize power across the two campuses and hostels.
