Ukraine has disclosed its first reported clash with North Korean soldiers, with President Volodymyr Zelensky estimating that approximately 11,000 North Korean troops are stationed in Russia’s Kursk region. Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov stated that a “small group” of North Korean forces had been encountered near the frontlines.
Although South Korean officials are cautious, they acknowledged an “incident” involving North Korean soldiers near combat areas. Reports indicate these troops are undergoing training and wearing Russian uniforms, likely integrated into Russian command structures.
In response to the reports, Ukrainian leaders and international bodies are expressing alarm. Zelensky condemned the lack of Western response, warning that North Korean involvement represents an escalation that could disrupt global stability. South Korea, increasingly concerned, has summoned Russia’s ambassador, demanding the immediate removal of North Korean troops from Ukraine.
Meanwhile, analysts suggest North Korea may have entered into an exchange agreement with Russia, potentially trading military personnel for Russian military technology.
Amidst these rising tensions, Russia and North Korea are moving towards a mutual defense treaty, pledging to support one another if either faces “aggression.” This potential pact was first proposed during President Vladimir Putin’s visit to North Korea, highlighting the deepening alliance between Moscow and Pyongyang amidst the ongoing Ukraine conflict.
