In the lead-up to Tunisia’s presidential election, candidate Ayachi Zammel has been sentenced to six months in prison for allegedly using fraudulent certificates.

The Jendouba Court of First Instance sentenced Zammel for “deliberately using a fraudulent certificate,” according to a report from Tunisia’s TAP news agency. Additionally, he received a separate 20-month sentence for falsifying endorsement documents required to run in last week’s race.

Zammel’s lawyer, Abdessattar Massoudi, has called the rulings a politically motivated attack aimed at undermining his client’s chances in the election. “It’s an unjust ruling designed to weaken him in the race, but we will defend his rights until the very end,” Massoudi stated.

Zammel was first arrested on September 2 for allegedly falsifying signatures needed for his presidential bid. Though briefly released, he was rearrested on similar charges.

The developments come just as Tunisia heads into its presidential election on October 6.
