Former U.S. President Donald Trump has once again hinted at the possibility of seeking a third term in office, despite the constitutional ban under the 22nd Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.
In an interview with NBC on Sunday, Mr. Trump claimed that a third term was not out of the question.
“A lot of people want me to do it,” he told NBC’s Kristen Welker when asked about extending his tenure. “But we have — my thinking is, we have a long way to go. I’m focused on the current.”
Pressed further on whether he seriously wanted another term, Mr. Trump responded, “I like working.” When asked to clarify, he added, “I’m not joking. But I’m not — it is far too early to think about it.”
He further hinted at alternative methods to achieving a third term, stating, “There are methods which you could do it.” However, he did not elaborate on what those methods might be.
The 22nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution explicitly states that no person “shall be elected to the office of the president more than twice.” Any attempt to override this amendment would require a major constitutional change.
Despite this legal hurdle, Tennessee Representative Andy Ogles recently proposed an amendment to the Constitution that could make Mr. Trump eligible for a third term.
Mr. Trump’s comments have reignited debates over term limits and presidential power, sparking both support and criticism across political circles.
