KeymasterA tragic accident along the Agbotikuyo axis of Old Ipaja Road in Lagos on Sunday has left one person dead, after a containerised truck reportedly suffered brake failure and crashed into a commercial minibus, locally known as korope.
According to a statement from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) spokesperson, Adebayo Taofiq, the fully-loaded 40-foot Mack truck (registration number MUS 729 XY) collided with the minibus, killing the driver instantly. Three passengers — two women and a man — were rescued unharmed and handed over to emergency responders for medical attention.
The truck driver allegedly tried to flee the scene but was quickly apprehended by alert LASTMA officers and handed over to the police from Elere and Area G Divisions.
Commenting on the incident, the Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Transportation, Sola Giwa, expressed condolences to the bereaved family. He urged truck operators to prioritize safety and perform thorough mechanical checks, especially of braking systems, before hitting the road.
“This tragedy could have been avoided,” Giwa said. “Roadworthiness checks are non-negotiable. The state government is fully committed to enforcing traffic safety measures and ensuring the protection of lives on Lagos roads.”
The crash caused heavy traffic along the corridor but was eventually cleared by emergency responders.
