President Bola Tinubu has directed a robust search and rescue operation for passengers involved in the helicopter crash that occurred off the Atlantic coast near Bonny Finima, Port Harcourt. The helicopter, operated by East Winds Aviation and registered as 5NBQG, had been hired by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) to transport contract staff to the FPSO—NUIMS ANTAN oil rig.
The tragic accident, which took place at 11:22 a.m. on Thursday, October 24, claimed three lives, with five passengers still unaccounted for. The Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development confirmed that the Sikorsky SK76 helicopter departed from Port Harcourt Military Base (DNPM) en route to the oil rig when it went down along the Port Harcourt waterways.
President Tinubu’s call for intensified rescue efforts includes deploying military personnel stationed in the region to join the search, coordinating closely with the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB), the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), and other essential agencies to ensure the search and rescue mission is comprehensive.
In a statement by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President (Information & Strategy), Tinubu extended his heartfelt condolences to the NNPC Limited Board and staff, as well as to the families of those who lost their lives in the crash. He offered prayers for the departed, asking for comfort for their families during this difficult time.
Rescue teams continue to work at the crash site, where three bodies have already been recovered.
