The Peter Obi rally has taken over Lagos, with large crowds in Bauchi, Asaba, and Uyo.
Peter Obi supporters rally in LagosSupporters of Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate, flocked to Lagos, Bauchi, Asaba, and Uyo on Saturday to rally behind the former Anambra governor.
Congestion was reported in several areas of the cities where the rally was held.
Supporters of Mr Obi were seen marching and chanting praise songs for the presidential candidate in Lagos, on the Lekki-Epe expressway and in Surulere.
Many supporters of Mr Obi ditched the Nigerian green and white flag for the Labour Party’s multi-coloured flag, waving as they marched in excitement. Others adorned paraphernalia of the party.
Another mammoth crowd marched from the Inter-bus roundabout along Nnbisi road in Asaba, Delta state, for the Obidatti rally, leaving a scanty audience to receive Governor Ifeanyi Okowa’s independence day address.
A similar scene was witnessed in Warri, where Mr Obi’s supporters gathered in large numbers at the Effurun roundabout and marched to Airport Road, then to the Warri City Stadium, where Labour Party leaders encouraged them to vote wisely in the 2023 general elections.
Dancers in traditional attire lined major roads in Uyo, chanting “Obi! Obi!” to the beats of traditional musical instruments. Other supporters wore Labour Party gear to show their support for Mr Obi.
Another enthusiastic crowd marched in Bauchi in support of Mr Obi, according to a Facebook video posted by The Nation. While waving the Nigerian and Labour Party flags, some of them could be seen chanting “Carry me dey go, Obi, carry me dey go, dey go, dey go.”
The massive turnout has put to question claims that Mr Obi, labelled by opponents as a social media candidate because of the support he enjoys from Nigeria’s social media space, would not enjoy the same support on the ballot.
