Stray Bullet Kills Teen During Anti-Cultism Walk in Lagos

Tragedy struck in the Oyingbo area of Ebute Metta, Lagos State, on Monday when a 16-year-old boy, identified only as Mustapha, was fatally struck by a stray bullet during an incident linked to suspected cult violence.

According to PUNCH Metro findings, the shooting occurred shortly after a peace walk organized by local youths aimed at addressing the rising tide of cult-related violence in the community.

Eyewitnesses said tensions flared moments after the walk ended when an argument broke out among participants. The disagreement escalated, and a suspected cultist reportedly drew a firearm and began shooting indiscriminately.

One of the bullets struck Mustapha, who bystanders confirmed was not involved in any cult group.

“Mustapha just came out to support the peace walk,” said a resident who spoke on condition of anonymity. “He wasn’t part of any gang. He was a calm and respectful boy. Unfortunately, he was hit by a bullet and died on the way to the hospital.”

The incident threw the community into panic and brought the event to an abrupt end.

Another participant in the peace walk was also reportedly shot and is currently in critical condition, sources told PUNCH Metro.

Efforts to reach the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report, as calls to his phone went unanswered and a text message sent to him had not been responded to.

This tragedy comes just days after another cult-related incident in the Idimu area of Lagos, where two men were found dead—one of them reportedly beheaded—in what police suspect was a targeted cult attack. The bodies were discovered on Sunday morning along Oladun Road, sparking fear and confusion among residents.
