Sora’s debut on Android is off to a remarkable start. On its first day on the Google Play Store, the AI-powered video app from ChatGPT creator OpenAI recorded an estimated 470,000 downloads across supported markets, according to fresh data from app analytics firm Appfigures.
That performance makes Sora’s Android rollout more than four times larger than its iOS launch, with 327% more installs (360,000 additional downloads). However, Appfigures cautions that the comparison isn’t exactly one-to-one.
When Sora first launched on iOS, it was invite-only and limited to the U.S. and Canada. The Android version, by contrast, rolled out more broadly — covering the U.S., Canada, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam — and OpenAI removed the invitation requirement in late October for key regions.
Despite its earlier exclusivity, the app quickly became a hit. Within its first week, Sora’s iOS version surpassed 1 million installs and climbed to the top of the App Store charts. As of now, it remains No. 4 on the U.S. App Store’s Top Free iPhone Apps.
Sora enables users to create videos using AI-driven prompts. Through a feature called Cameos, users can even animate themselves or friends inside these videos. The platform also features a TikTok-style vertical feed, letting users scroll through creations from others experimenting with the technology.
Appfigures has since updated its earlier iOS estimates. Initially, the firm projected around 56,000 first-day downloads for Sora on iOS, but with refined modeling, it now believes the actual figure was closer to 110,000, including about 69,300 downloads in the U.S.
For comparison, Sora’s Android release saw about 296,000 U.S.-based installs out of the total 470,000, signaling that enthusiasm for OpenAI’s video tool remains strong even after the initial iOS buzz.
The Android launch also coincides with rising competition in the AI app space — notably from Meta AI, which rolled out its standalone mobile app to European users today following its earlier debut in the U.S.
