Nigeria is a country with people that love sex a lot, yet for a country that can’t do without “sex issues” every day, we do not talk about sexual-reproductive health matters enough. We choose to ignore it because we are shy, or it is something to be ashamed of or a “taboo” topic.
It’s shocking how a lot of people are too timid to about sex with their partners because of the fear of being judged or criticized.
One lady told her boyfriend that she feels safer when he uses condoms, but he said in their village it is a taboo to use condoms with your woman.
A lot of women fall for these types of lies and end up with infections like chlamydia, Gonorrhea and HPV.
Sexual health is not only about STIs, but also about understanding your own body, needs and reproductive health. How often do you go for health screenings like STI tests?
If you have sex, you should learn to screen for infections from time to time and develop health-positive behaviours e.g using condoms, other contraceptives and communicate & establish boundaries with your partner. Sexual health is also learning to take charge of your sexual life.
This guy came to the hospital with secondary-stage syphilis- sore, bumps and rashes around his genitals. When he was asked why it took him so long to get it treated, he said he was ashamed to speak up until it got worse.
Meanwhile, STIs are nothing to be embarrassed about.
Rather, when you realize you have an infection, talk to your doctor so you can treat it and not put your health and your partner at risk.
Having an infection in your genitals is not something to feel ashamed of. Speak up now & reduce your risks of dying.
Sexual health awareness gives you a positive body image. To be enlightened on sexual health properly.
