KeymasterThe Gombe State Police Command has confirmed the tragic death of two children and injuries to 20 others following a stampede at the Gombe main Eid ground on Sunday.
Police spokesperson DSP Buhari Abdullahi stated that the incident occurred around 10:45 a.m. at the exit gate of the Eid ground, immediately after the conclusion of Eid prayers.
“The stampede was caused by inadequate exit access, as a large crowd, primarily women and children, rushed to leave the venue. The situation, worsened by intense heat, led to the unfortunate incident,” he explained.
A total of 22 individuals were affected, with victims rushed to nearby hospitals for medical attention. Sadly, a four-year-old boy and a six-month-old baby girl were pronounced dead while receiving treatment.
The police command extended condolences to the bereaved families and wished the injured a swift recovery. Authorities have urged Eid ground managers to ensure all entrance and exit gates remain open to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Governor Orders Investigation
Reacting to the tragedy, Governor Inuwa Yahaya expressed deep sorrow and condoled with the families of the deceased. In a statement issued by his media aide, the governor ordered a thorough investigation into the circumstances leading to the stampede.
“The safety and well-being of our citizens remain a top priority. The state government is committed to learning from this incident and implementing corrective measures,” Governor Yahaya assured.
He also directed that all medical expenses for the injured be fully covered by the state government to ensure their recovery.
