Pope Francis has been discharged from Gemelli Hospital in Rome after a five-week stay that included two life-threatening health episodes, according to his doctors. The 88-year-old pontiff, who was admitted on February 14, appeared at his hospital window on Sunday to greet and bless the crowds before leaving for the Vatican.
Though not fully recovered, Pope Francis’ doctors confirmed that he no longer has pneumonia and remains alert and oriented. They recommend at least two months of rest before he resumes full responsibilities.
The news of his discharge was met with joy in Rome and beyond. Mayor Roberto Gualtieri described it as “a great gift to the city and the world,” while crowds gathered outside the hospital to catch a glimpse of the Pope. Many were moved to tears, including visitors from as far as Brazil and the United States.
