Pep Guardiola, the mastermind behind Manchester City’s recent golden era, has hinted that he would be open to advising the club on selecting his successor, should the time come for him to depart the Etihad. As the Catalan coach enters the final year of his contract, speculation about his future has been swirling. While he hasn’t yet decided whether to extend his stay into a record-breaking 10th season, Guardiola has expressed his willingness to provide input on who should lead the club after his tenure.
Guardiola, who has guided City to six Premier League titles and their long-awaited Champions League victory, said: “Of course, with the relationship I have, if they ask me I will give my opinion, but it is not my job. The decision will be taken by them, not by me. It belongs to the club.”
His comments come amid news that Txiki Begiristain, City’s director of football and long-time collaborator from their Barcelona days, will retire next summer. Begiristain, along with City’s CEO Ferran Soriano, played a pivotal role in luring Guardiola to Manchester and laying the foundations for his success. Their partnership dates back to their time at Barcelona, where they also enjoyed remarkable achievements.
While the club’s leadership transitions may cause uncertainty, Guardiola remains confident that Manchester City’s hierarchy is well-prepared for the future. He stressed that the support from above was key to his initial decision to join the club, and has been invaluable throughout his tenure.
Reflecting on his early days at City, Guardiola said: “The reasons I came here were; one for the potential for the future, but especially because a few friends like Ferran and Txiki were here. At the time, I didn’t know my chairman and my owner, the players or the backroom staff, but I knew them.”
City’s chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak and owner Sheikh Mansour have backed Guardiola wholeheartedly since his arrival, ensuring the club had the stability needed for long-term success. This relationship has seen City emerge as one of the dominant forces in European football.
As City prepare to face Wolves in their next Premier League match, the team is without key players Kevin De Bruyne and Nathan Ake, both still recovering from injuries. Despite these setbacks, the champions are looking to continue their strong run and maintain their status as the team to beat in England.
The future remains uncertain for Guardiola, but whatever decision he makes, it’s clear that he will continue to play an influential role in shaping the future of Manchester City—even if from the sidelines.
