Paul Biya Secures Eighth Term, to Lead Cameroon Until 2032

Cameroon’s long-serving president, Paul Biya, has been declared the winner of the country’s October 12 presidential election, extending his rule for another seven years—until 2032, when he will be nearly 100 years old.

“Hereby proclaimed President-elect: the candidate Biya Paul,” announced Clement Atangana, president of the Constitutional Council, as the final results were made public on Monday.

According to official figures, Mr. Biya, 92, secured 53.66% of the total votes, defeating his closest challenger, Issa Tchiroma Bakary, who garnered 35.19%.

Mr. Biya, the world’s oldest sitting head of state, has ruled Cameroon since 1982 and has consistently maintained power through successive reelections. His latest victory comes amid growing domestic unease over his prolonged tenure, sporadic protests, and increasing concerns about governance and succession.

Reports indicate that the election period was marred by tension, with at least four protesters killed in Douala following clashes with security forces. Opposition groups also staged demonstrations, alleging electoral irregularities.

Lead opposition candidate Issa Tchiroma, a former minister, had earlier declared himself the winner, claiming to have received “more than 50% of valid votes.” He called on Mr. Biya to “show courage and humility” by conceding.

Despite questions surrounding his health, limited public appearances, and frequent medical trips abroad, President Biya’s campaign focused on strengthening national security, creating youth employment, and improving infrastructure and social welfare.

With this victory, Paul Biya extends his decades-long grip on power, reaffirming his position as one of the longest-serving leaders in the world.
