A Florida couple has been arrested after their 4-year-old twin boys were allegedly shot with a handgun they reportedly discovered beneath a couch cushion inside their home.
According to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a call in the early hours of Saturday, November 8, following reports that two young boys had sustained gunshot wounds.
Authorities said 39-year-old Keishara B. Goodrum and 40-year-old Maurice Wayne Bright Jr. were at home at the time of the shooting. Goodrum told officers she was in the kitchen preparing breakfast when she heard what she believed was a gunshot. Moments later, she discovered one of the twins suffering from a wound near his arm, Fox35 reported.
In the arrest affidavit, Goodrum allegedly admitted that she had been drinking the night before. Meanwhile, Bright told investigators he was outside cooking when he heard a “commotion” and rushed inside, according to NBC News.
Goodrum and Bright immediately transported the injured children to a nearby hospital. While en route, they realized that the second twin had also been shot. Both children were later admitted to Arnold Palmer Hospital, where they remain in “critical but stable condition,” per WFTV.
Investigators said Goodrum told police she may have “forgotten to secure her firearm” the previous night and believed she might have left it under a couch cushion where the boys could have easily found it. Authorities confirmed that three other children were also in the home at the time of the incident.
Both parents were arrested on November 9 and booked into the Orange County Jail. Goodrum faces two counts of child neglect with great bodily harm, while Bright was charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Jail records show both are being held on $10,000 bond.
Florida state law mandates that parents or guardians with children under the age of 16 must securely store any firearms kept in the home. The Florida Sheriffs Association explains that the law requires guns to be placed in a “locked container or secured with a trigger lock” to prevent minors from accessing them.
“If a minor does gain access to an unsecured firearm, the owner may face criminal charges if the firearm is discharged, causing harm,” the association noted in a 2024 blog post. “This law is designed to promote responsible gun ownership and protect minors from accidental firearm injuries.”
The Orange County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the Florida Department of Children and Families is involved in the children’s care. However, officials stated that Bright may retain custody of the other children if he is released on bond.
