Osinbajo warns APC governors that the ASUU strike requires immediate action.

Okowa challenges FG on Delta education model to break the impasse, and minister believes that FG has done enough for universities.

      • The government will meet with councils and VCs on September 6

Yesterday, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo met with certain governors of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in his office and urged them to take immediate action in response to the weakening economy and the ongoing Academic Staff Union of Universities strike (ASUU).

The governors visited Osinbajo at the Presidential Villa in Abuja to wish him well as he recovers from surgery he underwent last month.

Governors from the following states were present at the meeting: Atiku Bagudu of Kebbi, Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti, Simon Lalong of Plateau, Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos, Muhammad Badaru Abubakar of Jigawa, Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq of Kwara, Abubakar Sani Bello of Niger, Dapo Abiodun of Ogun, Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa,

The leaders agreed on urgent measures for the benefit of Nigerians during the brief encounter, but other significant national issues were also brought up, according to information obtained by The Guardian.

“We all need to work together on these important issues,” the vice president stated. We must quickly and thoroughly consider our options.

Meanwhile, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, governor of Delta State and vice presidential candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), requested the Federal Government Wednesday to examine his educational policies and how he successfully manages four institutions.

Okowa invited the government to visit him and “understudy the four universities in Delta to see how we are keeping our students and teachers on campus by providing suitable facilities in our schools” after expressing disappointment over the protracted strike.

“If Mr. President sincerely has the interest of kids at heart, he should set aside ego and come to adopt his (Okowa’s) model on education,” the governor said, speaking through his chief press secretary, Mr. Olisa Ifejika.

Additionally, Goodluck Nanah Opiah, Minister of State for Education, emphasized that the Federal Government has made significant contributions to the education sector, particularly to universities, and that this should cause ASUU to reevaluate its stance on the industrial action.

According to the minister, it won’t be inappropriate for significant political players, such as National Assembly members, to take advantage of what the government has accomplished and make sure the academics resume their jobs.

In his presentation to the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETfund), which had visited the ministry as part of its oversight duties, the minister made this disclosure.

“Government has given in to all of ASUU’s demands,” Opiah continued. The government does not support those who do not work but want compensation, though.

Opiah, who filled in for Mallam Adamu Adamu, Minister of Education, said that TETfund has exceeded expectations by disbursing trillions of naira, in excess of what ASUU had demanded for the building of university infrastructure.

In a related event, in response to the ASUU’s continuous strike action, the Federal Government called a conference with vice chancellors, pro chancellors, and the management of federal universities through the National Universities Commission (NUC).

The NUC secretariat in Abuja is where the conference is scheduled to take place on September 6, 2022, to discuss measures to reopen the universities.

This was called for in a letter sent to all vice-chancellors, pro-chancellors, and council chairmen of federal institutions by Chris Maiyaki, the NUC’s deputy executive secretary (administration).
