Okoli Chizoputam, a final-year student at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, was slain on Monday, April 10, by an irate mob of fellow students over accused phone theft.
Several students accused the unidentified student from the Department of Civil Engineering of stealing a phone and proceeded to beat him up till he passed out at Awo Hall on the university campus.
He was brought to the OAU Teaching Hospital’s Emergency Medicine Department after his condition deteriorated as a result of the beatings, but he was proclaimed dead on arrival.
The institution’s SUG President, Olayiwole Folahan Festus, issued a statement condemning the mob conduct as brutal and barbaric.
He promised to see that justice is served. He also announced the suspension of the Awo Hall Hall Executive Council’s activities awaiting the result of the probe.
