Nigeria’s Hardship: A Growing Mental Health and Social Crisis

Nigeria is facing severe economic challenges that are deeply affecting the mental health and well-being of its citizens. The removal of the fuel subsidy has worsened the situation, leading to skyrocketing inflation, increased transportation costs, and a surge in poverty. As a result, many families are struggling to make ends meet, with rising crime rates, broken homes, and children dropping out of school.

 

This economic strain has led to widespread anxiety, depression, and even suicide, with little access to mental health care or social support services. The lack of social safety nets and the limited presence of social workers further aggravate the crisis.

 

The government must urgently address this issue by expanding mental health services, supporting vulnerable populations, and reassessing economic policies that are pushing Nigerians deeper into hardship. Without immediate intervention, the country risks an increase in crime, violence, and a generation trapped in poverty.

 

Mental health and social welfare must become priorities in policy reforms to prevent further societal breakdown.
