Musk Sues OpenAI and Apple, Claiming They’re Blocking Grok
Elon Musk’s xAI filed a multibillion-dollar lawsuit yesterday against Apple and OpenAI, alleging that their partnership is preventing “groking” from ever becoming a household verb.
The complaint portrays Apple and OpenAI as “two monopolists” whose alliance—struck last year to embed ChatGPT into iPhones—allowed them to corner the AI market while throttling Musk’s ventures.
According to the suit:
Apple is accused of blocking xAI’s Grok chatbot from scaling by making ChatGPT the only AI tool automatically integrated into its devices.
Apple allegedly manipulates Grok’s App Store visibility by suppressing its rankings and delaying updates.
xAI’s legal team argues this deliberate undermining harms X, which depends on Grok’s features as it pushes to become an “everything app.”But the pushback came quickly: X users noted that OpenAI’s competitors DeepSeek and Perplexity have both reached the App Store’s No. 1 slot after Apple partnered with OpenAI. For its part, OpenAI dismissed the case, calling it “consistent with Mr. Musk’s ongoing pattern of harassment.” Musk, who co-founded OpenAI before parting ways, previously sued the company last year, accusing it of abandoning its nonprofit mission.
Apple, meanwhile, is no stranger to antitrust claims. A government lawsuit recently accused the company of stifling so-called “super apps” that could make it easier for users to leave the iPhone ecosystem. And in a separate legal battle, a judge sided with Fortnite-maker Epic Games, ordering Apple to lift restrictions that blocked competing in-app payment systems.
